About us
La Platjeta is a project born in La Barceloneta to make our product known: we fish and sell fresh, quality, and local fish and seafood.
For generations, our family has worked in traditional fishing, a job that nowadays is trying to add new technologies to reduce its environmental impact.
We have two boats: “L’Òstia”, in honour of our beloved Barceloneta; and “el Nus”, the youngster that started this adventure.
Our job in La Platjeta
We want to make the quality of our product known since there is no fresher fish and seafood.
Every morning, we go to work, and it is not until the afternoon that we sell fish at the auction, the fish market or the central market.
That is why there are never excess fish or seafood for the next day. Our product is always fresh from the day and local, as the fishermen have fished it a few hours before in the Catalan coast.
La Barceloneta, a fishermen’s neighbourhood
La Barceloneta’s history has always been linked to the sea. The neighbourhood was built on the Mediterranean Sea thanks to the accumulation of sand and the annexation of the Island of Maians. That allowed the construction of the port, the economic motor of the neighbourhood and the centre of its activity.
Traditional fishing has been the main occupation in the area for many years, and it is not difficult to find residents of La Barceloneta who are descendants of sailors.
Nowadays, La Barceloneta is still related to the sea, but maritime activities have lost prominence to the tourist ones. It is usual to see many cruise ships in the port or tourist crowds visiting the neighbourhood’s beaches all year.
However, did you know that there are still fishermen in La Barceloneta? At the end of the street called Escar we can find, although a bit hidden, el Moll del rellotge (the Clock’s Wharf), which continues its traditional and frenetic fishing activity.
Code of Good Business Practices
La Platjeta adheres to the Agreement of the Code of Good Business Practices along the Food Chain in Catalonia (CBPC).
The Department of Agriculture is the precursor of this initiative and coordinates its meetings. It is voluntary, and all agents in the food chain participate: production, industry and agri-food distribution. Its main objectives are:
- To improve relationships between the different types of operators throughout the entire value chain.
- To improve transparency, agility and efficiency in commercial relationships.
- To improve the information and perception consumers receive about agri-food products and the sector functioning.
- To point out the value of agri-food products that have more quality and are more alimentary secure, sustainable and respectful to animal welfare.
- To improve market commercialisation, growth and orientation.
- To improve efficiency and technological development.
- To promote the channels that favour the commercialisation of local production.
- To improve the market orientation of the entire value chain.
- To implement tools to communicate and resolve conflicts between companies and all types of operators.
